{'I could have killed them' - Lawson experiences dangerous incident with F1 track officials
Formula 1 competitor Liam Lawson revealed he narrowly avoided a potentially deadly collision during Sunday's F1 event in Mexico when two marshals darted across the track immediately ahead of his car
The alarming incident took place on the third circuit when track officials were spotted on the circuit as Lawson was rejoining the race following an quick visit to the pits to change his compromised front wing
Driver's Immediate Reaction
Immediately after, Racing Bulls driver Lawson radioed to his team engineer saying: "Is this for real? Could you believe what happened? I nearly... ended their lives"
"I truly couldn't comprehend what I was seeing"
"I came out on a brand new hard tyres, and then I got to Turn One and unexpectedly appeared two dudes dashing across the track"
"I nearly hit one of them, honestly, it was extremely hazardous"
Safety Concerns Raised
"Obviously there's been a failure in communication somewhere but This is the first time I've faced that before, and I haven't previously witnessed that in the past. It's pretty unacceptable"
"We can't understand how on a live track safety personnel can be permitted to just sprint across the track like that. I don't understand the reason, I'm confident we'll get some form of reasoning, but it really can't happen again"
Formal Inquiry in Progress
Formula 1's governing body, the International Automobile Federation (FIA), is thoroughly reviewing the situation
"After an occurrence at turn one, track officials was informed that debris was present on the track at the turning point of that curve" declared the governing body
"In the third rotation, safety personnel were alerted and made ready to go onto the racing surface and remove the wreckage once every vehicle had gone by"
"Immediately when it was understood that Lawson had entered the pits, the orders to send officials were rescinded and a caution signal was displayed in that section"
"We are still investigating what transpired after that point"
