Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for an extended period when dozens of them entered the national airspace.

Flight Disruptions

The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.

Law Enforcement Actions

Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the aviation facility.

Neighboring Country Impact

At the same time, the border area of Poland, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.

Illegal Transport Methods

Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a method that is highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."

Law Enforcement Objectives

Officials added that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that this activity become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."

Regional Security Context

The recent incidents occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across European nations.

Recent incidents in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
