No fewer than thirteen people perish and 98 hurt in train derailment in Mexico.
A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the speed and management of the country's flagship public works projects.
The disaster occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” affirmed the national leader.
The leader announced that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The president noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term finished the prior year. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's strategic agenda for the southern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both railway systems was managed by the armed forces, marking a significant increase of its duties in civilian projects. They were executed at an accelerated speed, defying forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had also fueled ongoing questions over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an previous collision this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a primary political opposition demanded an urgent pause in the building and running of all similar projects.
This pause was proposed pending a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "requires swift accountability."
In reaction, the head of state insisted that the train had been running in total accordance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and operation of these national initiatives.
