The future president of the prestigious debating society has been removed from his position after failing a no-confidence vote that followed his disputed social media posts about the conservative activist.

The vote against the student leader achieved the required super-majority to remove him from office, according to an statement from the organization.

Contentious Posts

The dispute began after Mr Abaraonye reportedly posted messages on social media that appeared to welcome the killing of the American conservative figure, who was fatally shot while speaking at a university in the United States.

According to sources, one Instagram post reportedly stated "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an extended form of the phrase 'lol'.

The student leader is also reported to have posted in a messaging group with other members seeming to express approval of the event.

Election Results

The vote of confidence took place over the weekend, with results announced on Tuesday.

Official notices showed that over twelve hundred votes were cast in favor of no confidence, while just over five hundred were opposed the motion.

The notice confirmed that the future president was deemed to have stepped down in accordance with the Oxford Union's rules.

Election Controversies

Voting operations were temporarily halted early on Monday after the election official was reportedly subjected to "interference, threats, and inappropriate behavior" from multiple individuals.

In a response, Mr Abaraonye asserted that the count had been halted because electoral officials believed "no legitimate and true result could be reached as a result of procedural failures".

His statement categorically refuted that any representative appointed by the student had participated in intimidating or disruptive behavior.

Continuing Controversy

The student stated that extremely serious issues had been submitted to the disciplinary committee and that he remained president-elect.

His statement added that he was "proud and thankful to have the support of well in excess of a majority of university members" who voted to have a "safe election and oppose efforts to undermine the electoral process".

Critics have said that any failure to remove him would "demonstrate internationally that the Oxford Union has chosen ideology over integrity".

External Responses

On Friday, Kirk's former chief of staff read out an public message to the society on The Charlie Kirk Show broadcast.

The letter accused the society of becoming a place where "presidents of the union publicly celebrate the assassination of a political opponent".

The statement indicated that if Mr Abaraonye were to keep his position, supporters would "personally contact every U.S. political figure who has ever graced the union's chamber and urge them never again to lend their name".

The society had previously criticized the student's remarks after Kirk's death and confirmed that concerns submitted about him had been referred for official review.

The student leader had been one of several students to discuss with Kirk at the union in spring.
