Users Stopping Slimming Jabs Put On Weight Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

New research reveals that individuals who come off new slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Research printed in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight people often shed about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals buying such medications must be informed of the potential of quick weight regain when the therapy ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery suggests a return to starting mass within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Therapies

The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.

Scientists point out that people who lose weight through dieting typically see a more gradual creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

The Reason for the Fast Rebound

Doctors suggest the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened rebound.

These medications imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Stopping of this medication means hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Condition?

Health authorities suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, considering the high risk of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.

This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Accounts

Users who have discontinued the medication explain a powerful return of hunger.

"It was like something that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.

This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Widespread Adoption

Recent estimates show that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand remaining high.

  • Adoption is greater among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians emphasize that while the jabs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss relies on combined lifestyle management.
