Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay System in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay technology

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in employing video review systems.

Replay technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors are granted the ability to question specific decisions from the chair umpire, echoing the system currently in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system will be operational on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step arrives only a year after the AELTC rolled out ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to review other situations, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a competitor can request.

Practical Application

A recent incident occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire viewed a video and determined Draper was guilty of interference, granting the rally to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further change at The Championships this year will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
